Far Cry puts players in the role of Jack Carver, a former special forces soldier who must rescue a journalist named Valerie from a tropical island run by Dr. Krieger. The island is full of mercenaries and strange mutant creatures. Players can use various guns, grenades, and vehicles to fight enemies. The game allows both stealthy and direct action approaches. Players can use the terrain and tall grass to hide from enemies. The AI is smart and can hear sounds, see the player from far away, and call for help. The game has both indoor and outdoor areas to explore. Players drive jeeps, boats, and hang gliders to move around the island. There are 20 missions that take players through jungles, beaches, and research facilities.

Players can use binoculars to scout ahead and mark enemies. The game includes a day and night cycle that affects how well players and enemies can see. There are many weapons to find, such as pistols, shotguns, rifles, rocket launchers, and special weapons. The multiplayer mode supports up to 16 players with game types like deathmatch and assault. The game has three difficulty levels that change how much damage players take and how smart the enemies act.
